On December 19th, 2008, Cripple Creek became the first town in Colorado to adapt the gaming changes included in the Amendment 50 law. Amendment 50 received the general consensus of the Colorado state voters on November 4th, 2008 Presidential Elections. Cripple Creek, which has a total population of 1,200 individuals, decided to give their approval to increased minimum bets to $100, the inclusion of craps and roulette to the games that can be played by customers on casino facilities and allow casino facilities the opportunity to decide on whether or not they want to open all throughout the day.
Officials said that this will help the casinos keep Colorado players from leaving the state to play in Las Vegas and Atlantic City casinos aside from attracting players from outside the state especially VIP's. The new proposal was approved in a margin of two hundred sixty-seven votes to 13 votes by the voters. Dan Baader, who is the town mayor, said that most residents have high expectations from the Amendment 50. Cripple Creek was the first one to decide on whether or not to implement the Amendment 50 ahead of Black Hawk and Central City.
The decision of the state voters to approve the Amendment 50 paved the way for Cripple Creek voters and other voters on Colorado's two mining towns on whether or not they approve of the Amendment 50's implementation. The improvement in the betting minimum, which will take place on July 2009, is expected to help the three Colorado gambling towns to protect themselves against the global financial crisis. The colleges in Colorado will also benefit from the earnings of the casinos.
