Fouad al-Zayat Files Case Against 6 British Casinos on Roulette Losses Issue

On September 14th, 2008, Fouad al-Zayat, a Syrian billionaire who lost around 191 million pounds at roulette, filed a lawsuit against six top British clubs, claiming that they intentionally allowed him credit. al-Zayat was one of the world's most prolific players. Known as the "Fat Man", his arrival at casino facilities in London usually causy frenzy and excitement especially with the officials of the casino. Over the past fifteen year, al-Zayat lost more than 191 million pounds on the roulette wheel but he is now fighting back against the casinos saying that the casino officials have conspired to saddle him with enormous debt.

The new move follows his victory in the High Court when his attorneys successfully argued that a two million pounds debt with Aspinalls of Mayfair should be erased because the illegally give him credit to continue playing. Sixty-seven year old Zayat, who said that he no longer played in casinos and claims that he was never a gaming addict and it is only form of escapism for him. He said that when he looks on the roulette, all of his worries disappear.

Zayat's problem with the Aspinalls is centered on a credit in a single night on March 2006 after he cancelled a two million pounds check following a dispute with a croupier. The casino had given al-Zayat a twelve month delay in repayment, during which he decided to continue to play.

The High Court judge has decided that the postponement of payment that the casino gave al-Zayat is illegal. al-Zayat has told his solicitors at the West End firm Quastel Midgen to gather the needed evidence from his files, which shows he was granted illegal credit of 67 million pounds between 1989 and 2003. Zayat commented that he was riding high at London's gaming tables in the 1990's when he won around eighty million pounds a year.

In 1997, he won a total of 42 million pounds from Crockfords in Mayfair. One casino official commented that al-Zayat's arrival regularly cause excitement and alarm among employees and officials of the casino especially because al-Zayat gives five thousand pounds tips. al-Zayat said that all of those things are just a thing of the past.
