Tote Roulette Earnings Improves By Five Percent

On July 17th, 2008, state-owned bookmaker The Tote, has seen the cash it won from players improved by five percent, because of the controversial touch screen roulette machine from Tote's 540 betting shops. In a surprising decision, the bookmaker decided not to report on how much gross profit that it had made from the five hundred pounds jackpot machines.

The current report for the year to March 31, which was passed to parliament, make clear that gross profit had improved 3.1 percent to 164 million pounds, showing the growth in the estate from the change in mix of gambling machines. A senior official in Tote said that the proportion of gross win (or the amount coming from players) produced by horse racing had dropped because of the immense popularity of the machines. The government's ownership of the touch-screen roulette terminals is sensitive as ministers that said that they are on probation. They also ordered the Gambling Commission to study the big-stakes slot machines.

Just last year, a survey for the commission found that 1:9 people playing on betting shop roulette machines was a gambling addict. In 2006, these slot machines made up about 1/3 of Tote wagering shop gross profits. Although Tote is best known for its pool wagering service, in financial terms the operation is made up of income from 540 betting shops.
